How Elon Musk’s APC Tweet Sparked Debate in Nigeria

Musk has urged his 227 million social media followers to cancel their Netflix subscriptions, accusing the streaming platform of promoting what he describes as transgender propaganda. In his latest culture war campaign, the Tesla tycoon joined a trend launched by conservative social media account Libs of TikTok that cited the animated series "Dead End: Paranormal Park" and Netflix's corporate diversity efforts as a cause for dropping the streaming service. A tweet by tech billionaire Elon Musk has sparked a wave of reactions among Nigerian social media users after many misinterpreted his reference to “APC.”

Musk, the CEO of Tesla, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday to describe his futuristic vehicle, the Tesla Cybertruck, saying, “Cybertruck is an APC from the future.”

The post quickly gained traction globally, but it triggered a particularly intense response from some Nigerians, who widely know “APC” as the acronym for the ruling All Progressives Congress, which produced President Bola Tinubu.

Many users flooded the comment section, mistakenly assuming Musk was referring to Nigeria’s political party rather than the military term Armoured Personnel Carrier, which the Cybertruck’s design is often compared to.

Some replies reflected confusion and curiosity. One user who identifies as Daily Pulse asked directly, “Which APC are you referring to, sir?”

Another user who identifies as First Principles said, “You might want to skip that abbreviation, Elon. In Nigeria, “APC” represents a political party that has brought years of hardship, insecurity, and hunger to millions. It’s a trigger for a lot of pain here.”

“Please find a synonym for the word APC because APC is the greatest nightmare in Nigeria, don’t let Nigerians start boycotting Tesla (sic),” one user identified as Dhamilarey said.

One Aanuoluwapo Sukoto opined, “As a Nigerian, seeing ‘APC from the future’ hit different. But this Cybertruck sounds like the real armored beast we need, indestructible, all-terrain luxury that vibes through rainbows and tough roads. The future is here, and Nigeria is ready for it!”

Another netizen, Parable wrote, “Please write that APC in full abeg, before this guys will use it and run agenda.”

“Anything APC gives us PTSD in Nigeria. We have been traumatized by that acronym,” one Tamunotonye tweeted.

While others leaned into humour and satire, a commenter joked about Nigerian politics, suggesting the tweet was somehow linked to local political figures, while another sarcastically implied Musk had taken sides in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Meanwhile, some users understood the tweets and tried to educate others who thought the tweets were probably influenced by the President’s kin.

A user, Dr Ose Etoobhio, said, “Dear Nigerians, I am fun at parties. APC means Armoured Personnel Carrier… like those armoured tanks!”

In his remark, internet sensation Daniel Regha said, “APC, meaning it takes the design and partial functionality of a military armored vehicle. It’s almost like a replica, but not quite, I presume.”
