VP Shettima Departs Abuja for 2026 African Union Summit in Ethiopia

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday departed Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 2026 African Union (AU) Summit.

The summit, with the theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” is expected to galvanise continental commitments on sustainable water management, improved sanitation systems and the broader development objectives outlined in the AU’s long-term Agenda 2063.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, said Shettima will join other African leaders at the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of AU Heads of State and Government, as well as the 30th General Assembly, scheduled for February 14 and 15, 2026, respectively.

The statement added that the Vice President would also participate in high-level side events on the margins of the summit and hold bilateral engagements with political and business leaders.

The engagements, the statement said, are aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic and strategic partnerships across the continent.

Shettima is accompanied by cabinet ministers and other senior government officials.
