Senate to Screen Amupitan Thursday

Barring any last minute change, the Senate will on Thursday screen  Prof Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), who was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Director of Information, Office of  the Secretary Research  and Information at the National Assembly, Bullah Audu Bi-Allah, confirmed this in a statement on Wednesday.

Recall that President Tinubu had on Tuesday requested the Senate to confirm Amupitan as new INEC chairman. Tinubu’s request was transmitted through a letter read during  plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Tinubu said, “In accordance with the provisions of section 154 subsection 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“Attached is his curriculum vitae, while hoping that the Senate will consider and confirm the appointment of the nominee in its usual expeditious manner.  Please, accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

Bi-Allah in a statement Wednesday said, “The  Office of  the Secretary Research  and Information wishes to notify members of the Press and the general public  that the Senate will, tomorrow, Thursday, 16th October, 2025, conduct the screening of the nominee of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR , Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The exercise is scheduled to hold at the Senate Chamber, National Assembly Complex.”
