NIS Clamps Down on Foreigners with Expired Visas

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has begun a clampdown on foreign nationals who have overstayed their visa or violated entry conditions.

Akinsola Akinlabi, NIS spokesperson, announced the move in a statement late Tuesday.

The development follows the expiration of a five-month amnesty period granted by the service, for foreigners in such categories to regularise their status without penalties.

The window had opened on May 1 and closed on September 30.

“With the expiration of the Amnesty period… enforcement actions will commence nationwide against foreign nationals who have overstayed their visa or violated their entry conditions,” Akinlabi said.

He said the enforcement will apply to holders of expired visa on arrival; holders of expired single and multiple-entry short visit or business visas; and individuals with expired comprehensive expatriate residence permit and automated card (CERPAC).

“In addition, foreign nationals found in violation of Nigeria Immigration Laws shall be subjected to sanctions, including payment of overstay penalties, removal and possible restriction from future entry into Nigeria,” Akinlabi added.

The NIS spokesperson listed applicable penalties to include removal, payment of $15 per day for each day overstayed or an option of two years entry ban for foreigners with less than three months overstay.

Akinlabi said the NIS is committed to ensuring lawful migration, safeguarding national security, and promoting transparency and efficiency across all immigration processes.
