The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched an investigation into the presence of ethylene oxide in Indomie Instant Noodles ‘Special Chicken Flavour’ after health officials in Malaysia and Taiwan recalled the product for containing the carcinogenic compound. The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, disclosed this in a press release, stating that the agency is conducting random sampling and analysis of Indomie noodles, including the seasoning, to determine if the same chemical is present in the noodles sold in Nigeria.
Although the Indomie noodles are not registered by NAFDAC for sale in Nigeria, the agency is extending its investigation to other brands of instant noodles offered for sale in the country. Noodles are also on the Import Prohibition List of the Federal Government of Nigeria and, therefore, not permitted for importation to Nigeria. The implicated Indomie instant noodles ‘Special Chicken Flavour’ are not authorized for sale in Nigeria.
Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that NAFDAC-registered instant noodles, including Indomie, are manufactured in Nigeria and subjected to strict regulatory measures covering all aspects of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). The Ports Inspection Directorate (PID) is also on high alert to guard against the importation of the recalled product into Nigeria.
The investigation by NAFDAC is a proactive step towards safeguarding the health of the public. Ethylene oxide is a highly toxic substance that can cause cancer and other health hazards if ingested. NAFDAC has urged Nigerians to be vigilant and report any suspected adulterated food products to the agency.
The recall of Indomie instant noodles ‘Special Chicken Flavour’ by Malaysia and Taiwan’s health officials is a reminder of the importance of effective regulatory agencies in protecting consumers’ health. It also emphasizes the need for food manufacturers to ensure that their products are safe and comply with international health and safety standards.
