Former Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi, has resigned as secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT).
His resignation followed the election of former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, as PDP national chairman on Saturday.
Both Makarfi and Turaki hail from the North-West.
In a letter addressed to BoT Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, and dated November 17, 2025, Makarfi said it would be inappropriate for the BoT secretary and national chairman to come from the same geopolitical zone.
He recalled that he had attempted to leave the position two months earlier but stayed on at Wabara’s request until after the national convention.

“The principal reason for my resignation then and now was, and is still, my belief that the national chairman of the party and the secretary should not come from the same geopolitical zone,” he said.
“Now that a chairman has emerged from the north-west, where I come from, it is necessary to give him full space to do the needful.”
Makarfi said his exit was necessary to avoid any “impression of imbalance” in the party’s leadership structure.
He thanked Wabara and members of the BoT for what he described as a respectful and cordial working relationship during his tenure.
