Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has called on the state’s athletes competing at the ongoing Gateway Games of the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta to aim for record-breaking performances and surpass long-time champions, Delta State.
Delta has consistently dominated the Games, securing the top spot in recent editions, while Ondo State’s best performance remains a fourth-place finish.
During a surprise visit to the athletes’ camp at Babcock University, Governor Aiyedatiwa encouraged the team to challenge top contenders and push beyond past limitations.
He urged them to improve on the state’s historical performance and strive for excellence, reminding them that hard work and determination could position Ondo State as a major force in national sports.
“At some point, Ondo State regularly finished between sixth and 13th positions; we’ve even come forth as our highest. You must not go below that. You must put in your best.

“We are here to encourage you, to identify with you, and to let you know that we are behind you in every way. I am also praying for you that no harm shall come your way,” he told the team, adding that as a sports lover himself, his administration strongly supports sports development in the state.
“Some of you, maybe this is where you’ll be discovered for greater performance later in life, where you can make a career out of this adventure,” the Governor noted.
The athletes thanked the governor for the surprise visit and vowed to win many medals at the Games
