Police Arrest 42 Illegal Miners Over Abduction of Kwara Monarch

The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 42 suspected illegal miners following the abduction of a traditional ruler in Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, disclosed this in an interview on Monday, stating that the arrests were made as part of ongoing efforts to investigate the incident and track down those responsible.

According to him, the monarch was abducted on Saturday evening by armed men at his residence in Olayinka community.

Adekimi said police operatives, acting on intelligence, launched a coordinated operation involving surveillance tools and other resources, leading to the arrest of the suspects.

He, however, noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the level of involvement of those arrested and to identify the actual perpetrators of the abduction.

“All the suspects are currently in custody, and investigations are continuing,” the police commissioner said.

He added that efforts are being intensified to secure the safe release of the abducted monarch.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf, also confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate and raising concerns over security in the area.

Yusuf said the local government is working closely with security agencies to ensure the monarch’s safe return.

He added that security personnel, alongside local vigilantes, have intensified search operations across surrounding communities.

The council chairman called on residents to support ongoing efforts by providing useful information, stressing that community cooperation is vital to restoring peace.

He also urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that authorities are committed to resolving the situation and strengthening security across the area.

The incident has heightened concerns among residents, with calls for sustained efforts to address insecurity in the region.
