EU Sends 687 Observers for Anambra Election, Urges Peaceful Conduct from Candidates

The European Union (EU) has announced the deployment of a vast network of 687 observers to Anambra State in preparation for Saturday’s high-stakes governorship election, marking what the organization terms one of the most extensive civilian oversight operations for a state poll in Nigeria’s history.

The deployment is being executed under the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme. The initiative is designed to enable civil society partners to strengthen peacebuilding, promote disability and gender inclusion, counter misinformation, and reinforce public confidence in the democratic process.

A statement released by the EU in Abuja confirmed that seven of the sixteen EU-SDGN implementing partners are already on the ground in Anambra State. These partners include key civil society organizations such as the Kukah Centre, Yiaga Africa, International Press Centre (IPC), Centre for Media and Society, Nigeria Women Trust Fund (NWTF), ElectHER, and TAF Africa.

The observers will operate in coordinated clusters focusing on specialized thematic areas, including election integrity and results verification; disability inclusion with trained observers and sign language interpreters; gender participation monitoring; media and misinformation tracking through journalists and fact-checkers; peacebuilding; and monitoring of polling logistics and sensitive election materials.

Detailing the ambitious scope of the mission, the EU noted: “The key feature of this unified deployment is to obtain a broad view of the election by utilising the diverse skills and experience of the EU-SDGN partners, analysing the findings, and compiling them into a comprehensive report that will be made public and available to all stakeholders.”

The unprecedented scale underscores the mission’s gravity, with the EU noting: “This is one of the most extensive civil society-led observer deployments ever recorded for a state election in Nigeria.”

Earlier this week, the EU-SDGN programme played a crucial role by facilitating the signing of the Anambra Election Peace Accord by all candidates and political parties. Following the ceremony, the cohort issued a stern reminder to the signatories: “The Peace Accord is not the conclusion, but the beginning of responsibility. Candidates must not only sign for peace, but act peacefully and respect the will of the voters.”

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan confirmed the commission is deploying approximately 24,000 ad hoc staff and has accredited about 540 journalists to cover the election, which will span the state’s 5,718 wards. A total of 16 candidates from 16 political parties are contesting the governorship election, including the incumbent, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, who is seeking reelection under the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
