The palace of the Emir of Daura in the ancient city of Daura in Katsina state is currently hosting the 2025 International Hausa Day celebration.
The day, first celebrated on social media in 2015 has now grown into a full celebration across the world every August 26, although the United Nations is yet to officially recognise the day.
Daura, the hometown of former Nigeria’s President, late Muhammadu Buhari, was selected to host this year’s celebration due to its historical status as cradle of Hausa people and language and the mother of the modern day Hausa states.
This is the first time the event is receiving full state backing through the Katsina State History and Culture Bureau.
Participants from 25 countries across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas are expected to be in attendance to showcase Daura as the cradle of the Hausa people and language to a global audience of millions.
The day-long programme will feature a grand Durbar procession showcasing traditional Hausa horsemanship and regalia, cultural exhibitions on history, attire, crafts, and cuisine, as well as symposiums by leading scholars on the modern relevance of the Hausa language.
Founded by journalist and Global advocate of the day, Abdulbaqi Jari, Hausa Day is being celebrated not only in West and Central Africa, but also in different parts of the world, including in Europe, America and Asia.
Jari also said Hausa is currently the 11th most spoken language globally and is projected to become the fifth most spoken language by 2050, making it a linguistic force with growing international influence.
The day was also founded to promote and preserve the Hausa language and culture while fostering unity among Hausa-speaking communities worldwide and showcasing the economic and creative potential of Hausa heritage in today’s interconnected world.
Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk Umar will host the event in his palace, while the acting Governor of Katsina state, Faruk Lawal Jobe, Sultan of Damagaram in Niger Republic, Aboubacar Sanda Oumarou among other dignitaries are expected to be in attendance.
